dc.description.abstractalt1The article deals with the problem of oral proficiency testing in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to the students of non-linguistic specialties. The author focuses on the role of testing in teaching and studying foreign languages and reviews its functions, stating that success in teaching ESP greatly depends on effective system of testing since it is not only the form of assessment but also a great tool of providing feedback and encouraging a backwash effect on learning and teaching process. Learning objectives for developing oral profession-oriented speaking are specified. The objects and content of testing oral ESP proficiency are determined. The author examines various types and forms of testing activities, identifies and characterizes the proper methods and techniques to test oral professionally-oriented communicative language competence in English. It is emphasized that much attention should be paid to the instructions of test activities making them clear and using the principle of individualization in accordance with the specified target levels of students. The recommendations for organizing the process of testing ESP oral proficiency are given. It is noted that students should be assessed to the same criteria which are used to specify their learning objectives taking into account the requirements for language proficiency level (performance descriptors) as measured by internationally recognized standards.en_US
